Sprinkles & Stripes – a stash busting beanie

I have come up with the most perfect stash busting project. Ever. If you have bits of fingering weight yarn and you’re not sure what to do with them – look no further! This beanie is really quite simple, only a step up from my Very Basic Beanie.

To get the effect, you hold two strands of fingering weight yarn together. You knit for a certain amount of rounds, drop one color, attach a different one. After another certain amount, you drop the color you’ve had longer, then attach another. And repeat. I absolutely love the striped, sprinkled effect you get.

I called this hat Sprinkles & Stripes because to me, it looked like sprinkles on ice cream when I was knitting dark blue held together with white. Plus, you know, Stripes.

I used Knit Picks fingering weight exclusively. I have a ton of it in my stash, because it is so affordable and really great yarn. Here is a great set of fingering weight yarns. Just in case you don’t have enough stash to bust, or just want some more really great yarn.

Pattern time:

Needles: size 7 16″ circulars and size 7 DPNs. These are my absolute faves: Chiagoo red lace circulars.

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn in multiple colors.

Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, Faur Fur Pom Pom if using

Directions:

Holding two colors of fingering weight yarn together, cast on 100 stitches. PM. Join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.

Following the pattern instructions below, *k2,p2; rep from * until end of round.

Repeat for three inches, or desired length of brim.

Continuing to follow pattern instructions below, knit all stitches until hat is 7.25″ from cast on edge.

Decreases (switch to DPNs when needed and remember to follow pattern instructions while decreasing):

Rnd 1 – *K8, k2tog; rep from* until end of round.(90 st)

Rnd 2 and all even rnds until rnd 12 – Knit

Rnd 3 – *K7, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (80 st)

Rnd 5 – *K6, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (70 st)

Rnd 7 – *K5, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (60 st)

Rnd 9 – *K4, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (50 st)

Rnd 11 – *K3, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (40 st)

Rnd 13 – *K2, k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (30 st)

Rnd 14 – *K1, k2tog; rep from* until end of round.(20 st)

Rnd 15 – *k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (10 st)

Rnd 16 – *k2tog; rep from* until end of round. (5 st)

Break yarn, pull through remaining stitches. Weave in ends. Add pompom if you want.

Pattern instructions:

Knit five rounds with two colors held together. Drop one color and attach another. Knit five rounds. Drop the color that has been used now for ten rounds. Attach another. Work five rounds. Drop color that has been used now for ten rounds. Attach another. Continue in this manner for the entirety of hat. (Honestly if you lose track of rounds that is fine – I just did five rounds in mine before switching, but you can do however many you want! And if you accidentally do a few more or less with one color it’s all good.)
