Well, it’s officially December. Which means for me, it’s officially Christmas season! And today, I used that as an excuse to make my all time favorite Christmas cookies- they’re a staple from my childhood- candy cane cookies.
First off, make sure you have a super cute helper.
Make a batch of red and white dough:
Twist them together and form canes. (can you tell which ones the helper did?) Get creative with the shapes! If you look, you can see a Santa in the corner:
Candy Cane Cookies:
3/4 C Butter, Softened
3/4 C Sugar
1 Egg
1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
1/2 Tsp Peppermint Extract
2 C All-Purpose Flour
1/2 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Baking Powder
1/3 C Flakes Coconut
1 Tsp Red Food Coloring
In bowl cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg and extracts. Stir together flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Stir coconut into one portion; blend food coloring into the second portion. Cover each one and chill 30 – 90 minutes.
Pinch a small ball of dough off each section (making sure they’re the same size) and roll into 5 inch ropes. Twist and shape like a candy cane. Repeat for each cookie. Bake at 375 for about 10 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack. Enjoy!
Make sure you save one for Santa!
