Let’s Play in the Outdoor Classroom

I have been very fortunate to work for the past three years at an amazing school. It has great classrooms, a huge common room, and wonderful gardens and an outdoor classroom – which I think is a really cool feature.

The other day, my coworker came up with an awesome activity for the kiddos, and I really wanted to share it (plus some other fun shots)!

The class was really excited – graduation and a field trip were coming up, complete with pizza and cake! So, they needed some outside time, and more than they could get at recess, plus a little more structured.

Enter the graph of found nature objects. We really only had one rule, and that was don’t pick anything that is living!

We had rocks, leaves, sticks & wood, and plants in pots.

As you can see, we found a lot of rocks! I had to actually tell the students to stop grabbing gravel from the paths in the garden!

Then, each child was given a handful of something from the graph to count, and the numbers were written down and a final tally was made, to determine what we could find the most of…if you couldn’t tell, it was rocks!

Just some more rocks.

So there you have it. I just loved this activity so much, I needed to share it.

My last day at this school was Friday the 16th of June, and while I am excited to join my new school, it is very bittersweet. I am going to miss it so. Here is to new adventures and great memories!

Thanks for stopping by! Love, Natalie.
